The morning after the brewday before is always a mixture of grogginess and excitement. Tired, but happy at the malt and hop aromas seeping from the Boxshed, we’re still waiting for that explosive fermentation S-04 brings, but pleased to see plenty of bubbles a-rising.
Here are the remaining photos from the session, following the mash. It was good fun, as all hoppy recipes are. All went well once again, which is great as long as we’re not storing up fortune for a gigantic cock-up somewhere along the line! But hey, nothing stuck or broke, we didn’t drop anything in the wort, and we ended up hitting our target of 1.046 and securing 50L of the good stuff in two fermenters.
Can’t ask for more than that really:
- Plenty of runnings and returns of the turgid bits and bobs
- In it goes. Looks nice. The hopstopper will earn its keep with all those pellets
- Mash tun drained and ready for two further large batch sparges at 76 degrees
- The mash run off barely covers the lower element these days
- Big batch sparges! Returns again again
- A single boiler element keeps things close to boil before full volume is reached
- Once the rolling boil was achieved, it was time to add sugars. Normal glucose once more
- Doesn’t look a lot of Target hops, but they contribute a major chunk of the 32 IBU bitternes
- This is the first time we’ve used EKGs in pellet form. They smelled gorgeous
- Two Protafloc auxilliary finings and the chiller in at 15 to go, along with the EKG
- No photo of the steep Styrians going in (maybe a vid?). Chilled to 30 degrees then ran it off into two FVs in batches
- Powerful run off great for aeration. Classic paddle/seive hardcore action 🙂
- The S-04 rehydrated into life brilliantly in some sweet wort collected from the sparge. Thanks BB…
- Not bad for a dry yeast with no starter in just 45 minutes
- Pitching in turn under wort flow into each FV
- Not a lot left in the boiler but cleaning chores
- Take our word for it – 50L at 1.046, aiming for 1.012 and a 4.4%ABV beer
- Aaand, rest
